Stamp Image Information

GIF files were utilized for the stamp images for two primary reasons: most of the stamps are printed in a limited number of colors, and many are engraved – so there's a lot of detail to show. JPEGs are better suited to graphics with a complicated mix of colors, and since they are compressed while saving, tend to loose detail when decoded – especially the large, engraved images.

The stamps were scanned at 1200 dpi and rotated until level. When reducing image size, the editing software (Adobe Photoshop™) was flagged to maintain the ratio between height and width. The large images were not scaled relative to each other. None are bigger than 6 inches high or 8 inches wide so they can be seen on screens with resolutions of 640x480. For the thumbnail images, the major dimension of the stamp (including perfs) in inches was multiplied by 40 and the result used as the number of pixels per inch for that axis of the image. This way the thumbnail images can be used to compare the relative size of the actual stamps. Both large and thumbnail images were converted directly from the scanned 1200 dpi to the GIF image's 72 dpi. The images were non-interlaced to conserve disk space.

These images were created in 1996/1997, and have not been changed or updated in the years since. The issue dates of the stamps are 1894-1980.
